Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom

Since 1975, this has been one of the most popular rides in all of Walt Disney World, and with good reason. Space Mountain is a high-speed roller coaster that uses clever special effects to make you feel like you're seated in a rocket that's racing through space. In reality, you'll be traveling about 28 miles per hour.

This entire ride is experienced in almost total darkness, so riders can't see what's coming. For those who don't normally enjoy roller coasters, this one offers a lot of high-speed sharp turns, but only a few small drops. It also does not travel upside down at any point along the track.

There is a 44" height requirement for this ride.

Age: Attraction Review:

ages 2-4: Even if the child is tall enough, most young children are terrified by the intense nature of the attraction and the complete darkness.

ages 5-10: Some kids love Space Mountain, others are frightened. You might consider riding the Tomorrowland Transit Authority for a close look at Space Mountain before deciding whether to take the kids with you or not.

ages 11-15: Most pre-teens and teens rate this as one of the best attractions in the Magic Kingdom.

ages 16-adult: Most adults rate this as one of the best attractions in the Magic Kingdom.

senior citizens: Unless you're into fast roller coasters, you might be best off with your feet on the ground.

Disney Tip

Space Mountain is one of the busiest attractions in the Magic Kingdom, with consistently long lines all day long. The slowest times at Space Mountain are the first hour the park is open and the last hour before the park closes.

Disney Facts

Originally, riders on Space Mountain sat in each other's laps. These original vehicles are now found at Disneyland and are in use at the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction.

Look down in the first room upon entering the building and you'll find hundreds of silver metallic balls, one of the quirkiest details you'll see in a Disney park.

The attraction was the first roller coaster to be built in the United States that run on a computerized system.
