History of Disney's Hollywood Studios
Disney’s Hollywood Studios, originally known as MGM Studios, was the first new theme park built during Michael Eisner’s tenure as CEO of The Walt Disney Company. Created to compete with Universal Studios Orlando, Disney’s entry into the “movie park arms race” came after Universal’s plans faced delays. Universal’s parent company, MCA, initially sought partners, including Paramount, led by Eisner at the time. When the Paramount deal fell through, Universal’s park was postponed, paving the way for Disney’s movie-themed park. Opening a year earlier in 1989, Disney’s MGM Studios bypassed typical permitting processes thanks to the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Despite being well-received, the park was often viewed as incomplete due to its tight budget and rushed timeline.

The Evolution of the Park
The original design of the Walt Disney World park was an upside-down Mickey Mouse, centered around Echo Lake. Although later expansions altered this layout, the hidden Mickey remains visible if you turn your park map upside down. Initially, Disney’s MGM Studios focused on providing an insider’s look at movie production with walking and tram tours through backlots, costume shops, and soundstages. This concept of showcasing behind-the-scenes magic was later replaced as the park evolved. In the early 1990s, Orlando was briefly rumored to be “Hollywood East,” attracting productions due to Disney Channel’s rapid growth. Attractions like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Play It! (2001) and American Idol (2008) replaced earlier shows, reflecting ongoing changes in entertainment trends.
A New Era and Recent Developments
A significant shift occurred when Michael Eisner stepped down in 2005, succeeded by Bob Iger. Under Iger’s leadership, the park was renamed Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2009, marking a return to Disney’s roots. Iger also acquired Pixar, revitalizing Disney’s Feature Animation. This period saw major changes, including the closure of Feature Animation and attractions like Superstar Television and The Monster Sound Show. The Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 brought further challenges, with Disney World closing for three months and facing financial strains. Despite these hurdles, Disney continues to adapt and maintain its reputation as “The Most Magical Place on Earth.”
