5 Tips to Simplify Trips with Special Needs Children

You know your child better than anyone, and you know how to plan for their safety and comfort during a trip to Disney World. However, there may be some things you don’t know to consider, or some simple tips you don’t know about. Let’s take a look at 5 quick tips that can help make your trip a success.

1. Bring a set of earplugs

The music and sound effects on some rides can be very loud. Bring a set of earplugs from home so your kid can easily reduce the noise volume as needed.

2. Consider splurging for a Town Car

The hotel you’re staying at may include a free shuttle to and from the airport or to and from the parks. While using it can save you some money, they often drop off and pick up at numerous hotels. These trips can literally take hours, and for some special needs kids the wait can be unbearable. Considering hiring a Town Car that will cost a little more, but will take you from door to door.

3. Ask about priority seating or request a table near an exit or window

Many restaurants and shows in Disney World have priority seating available – you just have to know to ask for it. At a minimum you should be able to get a table near an exit or window so your child will feel less confined.

4. Pin trading offers many opportunities for growth

It’s common for kids who have social or communication issues to be totally comfortable with pin trading. This is typical because it’s a safe, scripted experience in which the child can prepare what they’ll see and know what to expect in return.

5. Wave pools can be great for sensory-defensive kids

Parents of special needs kids give high marks to sandy beaches, whirlpools, and wave pools found at water parks like Typhoon Lagoon. Visiting these parks is also a great way to take a break during the hottest and busiest crowds in the theme parks.
