National Puppy Day
March 23 was national puppy day, and though we’re coming in a day late we know it’s never too late to celebrate our best furry friends. After all, who doesn’t want a whole day to fawn over their pet? To shower them with love, affection, and gifts.
Even more so than bringing attention to our pets, the day was originally started in 2006. It was a way to bring attention to the horrors of puppy mills across the country. Uncouth breeders mate purebred dogs many times to create puppies, many of which are born in unhealthy and diseased conditions. They sell these dogs for a high profit often without any sort of health care or vaccinations.
Many of these puppies are the offspring of an older sibling and their mother, which cause many health issues. Many puppies die in these unsanitary and unkempt conditions. Disease, worms, and side effects of being closely bred taking them before they even have a chance to survive.
So, if you’re considering adopting a new furry family member, please consider checking out the shelter. The ASPCA states that 3.3 million dogs enter the shelters every year, some of these with whole litters of puppies. Each dog has the potential to be a fur-ever friend, they just need the opportunity. Pure breeds have the potential to be open for more health issues than mixed breed dogs.
