Keeping Your Kids Safe in the Hot Orlando Sun

There’s a lot of fun to be had in Orlando, but those sweltering summer days can cause trouble of your young kids if you’re not careful. Not to mention the pools! Did you know that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention drowning is responsible for more deaths of children 1 – 4 than any other cause but birth defects? The great news is that you can take steps to keep your kids safe in the heat and in the sun.

Teach kids to swim before you take off on vacation

Of course you’ll supervise your kids when they’re in the water, but accidents can happen even when your eyes are on them – especially when you’re sharing your hotel’s pool with dozens of other people. Teach your kids to swim at your hometown YMCA and let them get comfortable before taking them out in Orlando.

Pay attention to your clothing choices

Your kids should be dressed in loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing. Many parents assume this doesn’t make that much of a difference, but the reality is that dark, heavy clothes can raise your kid’s temperature by several degrees.

Take plenty of cold showers and baths

There are many reasons to shower more on days when it’s hot. Not only will everyone be sweating, and sticky kids can be more moody than usual, but cool showers and baths can reduce your internal body temperature. They’re a great way to recharge and refresh after an afternoon break and nap.

Hydration is essential

It can’t be stressed more: hydration is key! By the time you feel thirsty you’re already dehydrated, and the same goes for your kids. Be aware that on the hottest of days the little ones won’t necessarily want to drink. Sometimes the heat can make them reluctant to eat or drink anything, but in the long run you’ll both be happier if you insist they get their liquid in.

Avoid the hottest parts of the day

The morning and evening are going to be the coolest times of day, though depending on when you visit they won’t be super cool either! However, they’ll always beat the noon – five PM heat. As a result, try to get your kids up early, head to the parks, and then take a mid-day break. Take a relaxing dip in the pool at your hotel or vacation home, grab your iPad and watch a movie together, or get the little ones down for a nap. No matter how you choose to use this time off, one thing’s for sure – you’ll all have a lot more energy to finish the day if you take a moment to relax in the afternoon.
