If you’ve made the mistake of thinking only of theme parks when you think of Orlando then you’ve missed out on some truly fantastic
water parks in Orlando. Today we’re taking a look at one of
Disney World’s two water parks:
Typhoon Lagoon. Check out these nine Typhoon Lagoon tips to help you make the most of your trip.
1. Bring your own towels
It may not occur to you to bring your own towels, after all,
water parks in Orlando will certainly have their own, right? Well, yes and no. At Typhoon Lagoon they do have towels to rent. You’re required to make a non-refundable payment in order to take them. Then you have to leave them at the park. While this may be fine if you take plenty of time between getting out of the water and getting in your car. On the other hand, bringing your own towels not only saves you money but allows you to keep your seats dry too.
2. There are many reasons to get there early
Many families wake up, have a leisurely breakfast, and head over to
Typhoon Lagoon in late morning or early afternoon. Don’t be one of these families. Not only will you have long lines to contend with at all the good water slides, but you’ll have a hard time getting a good place to sit. If you get there early, you can take your pick of spots in the shade.
3. Bring your own snacks and lunch
There are several restaurants at Typhoon Lagoon but none of them have particularly good or interesting food. And, of course, it’s expensive. Make the most of your day by bringing your own sandwiches, fruit, and snacks. There are several bars throughout the parks so you can enjoy an adult beverage while you relax in the sun.
4. Take pictures right away and then stash the camera
Water parks in Orlando are heavily themed and feature lots of great photo ops. However, you don’t want to walk around with your camera or smartphone out all day. Not only could it get wet, but most swimsuits don’t offer pockets to store it in. We recommend making the rounds as soon as you get there, taking photos, and then stashing the camera for the rest of the day.
5. Don’t bring floats
Typhoon Lagoon does not allow you to use your own flotation device. You can rent a life vest (but you must leave your ID behind) and there are several rides that come with floats. The wave pool has a limited number of innertubes you can use as well. Just know that you are not allowed to use your own floats in the water park.
6. Consider the locker options
For some families, renting a locker is well worth the cost. For others, it’s not. A regular size locker will cost $10 for the entire day while renting a larger size locker will run you $15. If you have a larger group and someone will be with the beach chairs the entire time then you may not need a locker. On the other hand, if you don’t expect your items to be supervised then a locker may make sense. Locker access lasts the entire day and you can get into it as many times as you need to.
7. Be prepared with your own sun protection
It likely comes as no surprise that buying items at the park will cost much more than it would cost to bring them from home or a local store. Many of the most commonly forgotten items include necessary sun protection. From sunblock to hats and sunglasses, make sure you bring your own to prevent the huge markup at Typhoon Lagoon.
8. Don’t miss the largest wave pool in North America
One of the most popular reasons for people to choose Typhoon Lagoon over other water parks in Orlando is its amazing surf pool. It has waves as big as six feet and it is indeed the largest wave pool in the entire North American continent. We recommend starting out in the shallow end and easing into the larger wave areas if you decide you can handle it.
9. Bring water shoes
There are several reasons to bring water shoes to Typhoon Lagoon. First of all, you’re going to be doing a lot of barefoot walking and the cement can get hot. Second, you won’t want to go into the bathroom with no shoes on. Sure, you can bring flipflops but you’ll have to take them on and off when going into the water. Water shoes can be worn the entire time.
